Athletes Ghislaine Barnay and Roger Bambuck brought glory to French sports in the 1960s. A couple in real life, the woman from Martinique and the man from Guadeloupe overcame the obstacles posed to people of color by post-colonial France. Their daughter, Aur\u00e9lie Bambuck, recounts their journey.<\/span><\/h4>\n

From the West Indies to Saint-Amand-de-Coly in the P\u00e9rigord, Ghislaine Barnay and Roger Bambuck<\/strong>, an iconic couple in French track and field in the 1960s, had an extraordinary journey. They simultaneously faced the demands of life as elite athletes and the lingering racism of a post-colonial France, a society that was not always welcoming toward people of color\u2014even when they were exceptional champions. Committed and true to their values, the Bambuck couple alone embody a chapter in our country\u2019s history. Their daughter, journalist Aur\u00e9lie Bambuck, has delved into her family\u2019s story.<\/p>\n

What is it like to be the daughter of well-known and respected champions? What mark do her parents leave on the worlds of sports, education, and politics? How does one pass on this legacy to future generations and to one\u2019s own children?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Their respective track records are impressive:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

  • Three-time French high jump champion, the first Frenchwoman to clear the milestone height of 1.70 meters, and a member of the French team at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics for Madame<\/li>\n
  • European champion in the 200m and the 4x100m relay, silver medalist in the 100m in 1966, world record holder in the 100m in 1968 (in 10 seconds), and bronze medalist in the 4x100m at the Mexico City Olympics. And he currently remains the only French sprinter to hold the world record in the 100-meter dash<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    They did not turn their athletic careers into a burdensome legacy for their two children, Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric and Aur\u00e9lie. It was while tracing her family\u2019s history that Aur\u00e9lie learned about their lives in the 1960s, moving beyond the concept of her parents as a couple to understand the values they instilled in the French people.<\/p>\n

    Once they are committed, they remain so even after their athletic careers have ended. That is why Ogre Bambuck was appointed Secretary of State for Youth and Sports in the Rocard administration from 1988 to 1991.<\/p>\n

    What guides my journey is the idea that sports don't exist in a vacuum. They are an integral part of our society.<\/p>\n
