{"id":28092,"date":"2022-02-17T14:25:21","date_gmt":"2022-02-17T13:25:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/antilla-martinique.com\/?p=28092"},"modified":"2022-02-17T14:25:21","modified_gmt":"2022-02-17T13:25:21","slug":"paris-laisse-fuir-son-methane-puissant-gaz-a-effet-de-serre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/antilla-martinique.com\/en\/paris-laisse-fuir-son-methane-puissant-gaz-a-effet-de-serre\/","title":{"rendered":"Paris Is Letting Methane, a Powerful Greenhouse Gas, Escape"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 class=\"h1_33\"><\/h1>\n<div><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"image_logo voir_logo\" src=\"https:\/\/reporterre.net\/local\/cache-vignettes\/L720xH480\/arton23159-46c55.jpg?1625147467\" alt=\"Paris laisse fuir son m\u00e9thane, puissant gaz \u00e0 effet de serre\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" data-cfsrc=\"local\/cache-vignettes\/L720xH480\/arton23159-46c55.jpg?1625147467\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"chapo\">\n<p>Leaks of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, have been detected in Paris: they originate from sewers, building boilers, and pipes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"texte\">\n<p>Nearly <a class=\"spip_out\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/methane-tracker-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">570 million metric tons<\/a> methane (<span class=\"caps\">CH<\/span><sub>4<\/sub>) are produced worldwide each year, of which 60<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>% are believed to be caused by human activity, according to the\u2019<a class=\"spip_out\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/articles\/global-methane-emissions-from-oil-and-gas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">International Energy Agency (<span class=\"caps\">IEA<\/span>)<\/a>. Yet this greenhouse gas is no less dangerous than carbon dioxide (<span class=\"caps\">CO<\/span><sub>2<\/sub>) : even though it is present in smaller quantities in the atmosphere, over a hundred years, its warming effect is <a class=\"spip_out\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globalcarbonproject.org\/methanebudget\/20\/files\/GCP_MethaneBudget_2020_v2020-07-15.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">twenty-eight times larger<\/a> per kilogram than that of the <span class=\"caps\">CO<\/span><sub>2<\/sub>. Hence the importance of <a class=\"spip_out\" href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1021\/acs.est.1c00859\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">the study<\/a>, published on June 23 in the journal <i>Environmental Science &amp; Technology<\/i>, which aims to measure concentrations of this gas in Paris. The goal: to achieve <a href=\"https:\/\/reporterre.net\/Methane-la-bombe-climatique-qui-pourrait-etre-desamorcee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reduce emissions<\/a> in the city by identifying them at the source.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u00ab<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>The sources of methane are still not well understood<\/i>, explains to <i>Reporterre<\/i>Jean-Daniel Paris, a researcher at the Laboratory of Climate and Environmental Sciences (<span class=\"caps\">LSCE<\/span>\u2013<span class=\"caps\">IPSL<\/span>) and co-author of the report. <i>When we talk about methane emissions, we tend to think of leaks in the pipelines that transport this raw material, agriculture, or waste management.<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>\u00bb<\/i> Methane is, in fact, produced and emitted during the decomposition of livestock manure and the organic components of agro-industrial wastewater. <i>\u00ab<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>But we don't think about cities, even though they are sources of emissions.<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>\u00bb<\/i><\/p>\n<p>To carry out their research, scientists at the <span class=\"caps\">LSCE<\/span>\u2013<span class=\"caps\">IPSL<\/span> Researchers from Saclay conducted measurements in Paris between September 2018 and March 2019 using mobile sensors installed in cars. The scientists traveled throughout 30<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>% on the streets of the capital, and in certain neighborhoods of Issy-les-Moulineaux and Boulogne-Billancourt (Hauts-de-Seine). <i>\u00ab<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>Paris isn't considered a major source of methane emissions, but we wanted to get to the bottom of it<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>\u00bb,<\/i> said Jean-Daniel Paris. As expected, a large portion of the emissions come from leaks in the gas distribution network. <i>\u00ab<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>More surprisingly, we also detected emissions from sewers and, likely, from private heating systems.<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>\u00bb<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Scientists have thus detected ninety potential leaks in Paris. Twenty-seven of these have been clearly identified and classified into three categories: emissions from the natural gas distribution network\u2014which spans approximately 2,000 kilometers\u2014account for 63<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>%, those from the sewer system 33<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>%, and building heating 4<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>%. Scientists have identified two outbreaks in the 16th<sup class=\"typo_exposants\">e<\/sup> district and in the southwestern suburbs of Paris.<\/p>\n<dl class=\"spip_document_36678 spip_documents spip_documents_center\">\n<dt><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/reporterre.net\/IMG\/jpg\/93432355_6597fbfc2e_k_1_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" data-original=\"IMG\/jpg\/93432355_6597fbfc2e_k_1_.jpg\" \/><\/dt>\n<dt class=\"spip_doc_titre\">The sewers of Paris. <i><a class=\"spip_out\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/salim\/93432355\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">Flickr\/<span class=\"caps\">CC<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">BY<\/span>\u2013<span class=\"caps\">SA<\/span> 2.0\/ Salim Virji<\/a><\/i><\/dt>\n<\/dl>\n<h3 class=\"spip\">Identifying Sources to Reduce Emissions<\/h3>\n<p>Based on these findings, the research team estimates that approximately 190 metric tons of methane are emitted each year in Paris, ranking the capital as <i>\u00ab<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>city with average methane emissions<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>\u00bb<\/i> compared to the cities in the United States and Europe that were studied. <i>\u00ab<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>These figures are probably an underestimate because we didn't cross every street<\/i>, \", Jean-Daniel Paris clarifies. <i>In addition, the leaks detected in the buildings originated from boilers on the ground floor or in basements, which the sensors were able to detect from the street. We do not have data for the upper floors.<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>\u00bb<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Understanding the sources of methane is an important first step toward effectively combating greenhouse gas emissions, the study notes. Especially since the <span class=\"caps\">CH<\/span><sub>4<\/sub> is often overlooked in climate change policies, even though it is increasingly being incorporated into national action plans. <i>\u00ab<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>As for the sewer lines, we need to invest in order to increase the number of repair projects. As for sewers, better maintenance of the systems could help reduce the presence of organic matter, which produces methane as it decomposes. And for private boilers, we need to ensure that the equipment is modern enough to prevent leaks.<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>\u00bb<\/i><\/p>\n<p>If no action is taken, methane emissions from human activities are expected to continue rising for the rest of the century, increasing by 70<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>% or more by 2100, for a global total exceeding 600 million metric tons per year. However, a <a class=\"spip_out\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/media\/study-cutting-methane-emissions-quickly-could-slow-climate-warming-rate-30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">a study by the Environmental Defense Fund<\/a> published in April 2021 indicates that, thanks to a wide range of existing solutions, it is possible to cut emissions by half <span class=\"caps\">CH<\/span><sub>4<\/sub> planned for 2030. Most of them\u2014about 60<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>% are inexpensive, and half of them have a <i>\u00ab<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>negative cost<small class=\"fine d-inline\">\u00a0<\/small>\u00bb<\/i>, which means that companies will make money by taking action.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/reporterre.net\/IMG\/pdf\/2021_global-methane_assessment_full_0-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Nations Climate and Clean Air Coalition<\/a> had already highlighted the importance of addressing methane emissions: rapidly reducing them using the tools already available would help limit global warming by 0.3 \u00b0C by 2040.
