On the occasion of and as part of the 110thth<\/sup> To mark the anniversary of Aim\u00e9 C\u00e9saire\u2019s birth, SAMAC, the airport company bearing his name, has just kicked off a series of cultural events\u2014running through June 26 (C\u00e9saire\u2019s birthday)\u2014in tribute to the illustrious Martinican poet and politician. We attended the opening night of the event.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a reminder, it was in January 2007 that a ministerial decree officially confirmed the airport\u2019s current name. And during that opening night\u2014highlighted in particular by the ballet\u2019s whirling performances Pom\u2019Kanel<\/em> and captivating readings by the\u2019Martinique Images Association<\/em> (AMI) \u2013 The Chairman of the SAMAC Executive Board, Frantz Thodiard, emphasized that this month of tribute was \u00abwell-deserved for the man who left his mark on our history, who spearheaded the modernization of our country, and who helped bring recognition to Martinican culture and heritage around the world.\u00bb\u00a0\u00ab He added, regarding the airport facility: \u00bbBearing the name of Aim\u00e9 C\u00e9saire means committing to continuing his work, and that is a responsibility we have\u2014one that I personally wish to fulfill to the very end\u2014because we have a duty to promote our country beyond our borders. \u2019 A leader who, on this last point, expressed his regret that the\u2019Martinique Aim\u00e9 C\u00e9saire Airport<\/em> is still not \u00abconnected\u00bb to the African continent (\u00abWe\u2019ve worked hard on this issue, and I haven\u2019t given up hope that one day we\u2019ll have a connection to Africa,\u00bb Frantz Thodiard remarked). This official also was quick to link the current efforts to modernize and expand the airport\u2019s infrastructure to \u00abour commitment to excellence.\u00bb.<\/p>\n
