Martinique is undoubtedly the French territory where the suffering of the past features most prominently in public debate and anniversary commemorations.<\/p>\n

There are several possible reasons for this insistence.<\/p>\n

The first stems, in a minority of people, from a genuine\u2014and perhaps genetic\u2014emotional response to the suffering endured by their ancestors. No one has the right to question this sensitivity.<\/p>\n

The second reason stems from the failures of a number of people, of all races, who seek to hide their inability to meet today\u2019s challenges by constantly referring to the past.<\/p>\n

Smoke and mirrors will remain an easy way to deceive people for a long time to come.<\/p>\n

The third reason stems from the arrogance of a number of Europeans who behave as if they were in a conquered country, convinced that the chain of command\u2014which is overwhelmingly held by other Europeans\u2014will always work in their favor.<\/p>\n

But the most important reason is undoubtedly the last one.<\/p>\n

It is linked to the continued existence, today, of a number of practices that are rarely discussed, for fear of sparking serious controversy.<\/p>\n

Comment nier que les salaires per\u00e7us dans le secteur priv\u00e9 sont trop souvent scandaleusement bas, alors m\u00eame que les b\u00e9n\u00e9fices des actionnaires sont plus que confortables? Des employ\u00e9s pr\u00e9sents dans la m\u00eame entreprise parfaitement rentable depuis 30 ans gagnent parfois \u00e0 peine\u00a0 le SMIC.<\/p>\n

Une telle anomalie ram\u00e8ne\u00a0 forc\u00e9ment \u00e0 un certain pass\u00e9.<\/p>\n

How can one deny that the Indian community is still subject to ostracism\u2014rarely denounced publicly\u2014on the part of certain Black people, an ostracism linked to the pre-slavery past?<\/p>\n

After all, how can we deny that there are a number of families in the B\u00e9k\u00e9 community where marriage to a Black man or woman would be seen as a fall from grace, and who carefully ensure that their children have as little contact as possible with Black children?<\/p>\n

Such practices also hark back to a certain past, and are not found with such intensity in any other overseas territory.<\/p>\n
