Gdc's Perspective"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote>\n<p class=\"s2\"><em><strong>Before tourism slogans began selling us \u00abauthentic destinations\u00bb and \u00abhybrid cultures,\u00bb Creolity was not a trendy concept. It was an accident\u2014or rather, a direct consequence of the greatest enterprise of domination, plunder, and blindness that Europe has ever organized: colonization. But like any great imperial adventure, it was full of surprises, especially for its architects. After all, what a brilliant idea it was to populate the West Indies with exclusively male colonists\u2014no women, no wealth, no plans other than those of the king\u2026 and then to be surprised that the local population didn\u2019t quite resemble Versailles.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"s2\"><strong>Yes, Creolity begins like this: with a bit of friction (in the broadest sense), a touch of manly solitude, a few bouts of tropical fever, and presto\u2014there you have it: cultural mixing!<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0First and foremost biological\u2014often without consent\u2014but also cultural: languages, music, plants, recipes, acts of resistance. Very quickly, colonial society\u2014designed to be hierarchical\u2014began to shift, to become entangled, and to invent its own forms. And to <strong>to give birth to a new humanity\u2014hybrid and magnificent. But shh, we absolutely couldn't say that out loud.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\">Because back in the city, people preferred to believe that white people kept to themselves, that Africans bore their chains in silence, that Native Americans had quietly died out, and that \u201cquestionable\u201d children could be content with pious first names and well-rehearsed silences. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<b>What was then called a \u00abhalf-breed\u00bb did not inspire the dreams of priests, stewards, or notaries<\/b>s. Hence the infamous *Code Noir* of 1685, which, under the guise of morality and order, sought to put everyone in their place: whites at the top, Blacks at the very bottom, and people of mixed race somewhere in between\u2014but never too close to the salons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\"><b>Of course, history had its own way of things. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Slaves fled, freed people prospered, women loved whomever they chose (or resisted as much as they could), and even some white children drifted toward social marronage. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The result: a Creole society was born, with its contradictions, tensions, rituals, music, twisted words, and indecipherable faces.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"s2\"><b>And then, there was this miracle: culture. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Creole, drums, street vendors, evening stories, and nameless recipes. Everything the colonial order hadn\u2019t anticipated, but which is now our source of pride.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"s2\">So, of course, there was also resistance. Some wanted to preserve their \u00abpure\u00bb lineage. The B\u00e9k\u00e9s, for example, tried to resist intermarriage the way one resists the winds of a cyclone: with high walls, family trees, and a keen memory of alliances. But let\u2019s be honest: on small, porous islands, as mixed as a melting pot, believing that one has remained 100 % European is a matter of faith. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <i><b>The myth of \u00abracial purity\u00bb is a convenient fiction used to perpetuate privilege, <\/b><\/i>But it doesn't hold up to DNA testing or parish records. Even the most conservative people probably have, somewhere in their family tree, a barefoot African ancestor.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"s2\" style=\"text-align: left\"><b>And beyond the French West Indies, this phenomenon is universal. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/b> There was Julien Raimond in Santo Domingo, who dared to demand equal rights for free people of color. There was Mart\u00edn Cort\u00e9s, the embarrassing offspring of the conquistador and the famous Malinche. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0There was Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Morelos, Andr\u00e9 Rebou\u00e7as, Robert Wedderburn, Sim\u00f3n Bol\u00edvar, and even Chico Rei\u2014each, in his own way, a spark of that mixed-race humanity, caught between two worlds, between two languages, between two silences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><b><i>In short, if colonial history teaches us anything, it is this: we can build empires, but we cannot prevent people from meeting, loving one another, mixing, and creating\u2014even in the midst of pain. And one day, what you used to call \u00abracial mixing\u00bb will become pride in one\u2019s roots. Perhaps, in your efforts to divide, you will have ended up enriching.<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"s2\"><b>Creolity is not a political agenda. It is a consequence\u2014a magnificent, conflict-ridden, vibrant consequence.<\/b>. It does not seek to erase the wounds of the past, but it offers a way to move beyond them. And, given the state of the world today, that\u2019s already quite an achievement.
