Fort-de-France, October 2, 2025 \u2013 Seismic activity at Mount Pel\u00e9e has reached levels not seen since 2019, with more than 4,000 volcanic earthquakes recorded in a single month, according to the Martinique Volcanological and Seismological Observatory (OVSM).<\/p>\n
\u00abThe probability of an eruption in the short term remains low, but we cannot rule out the possibility of one in the medium term,\u00bb said its director, J\u00e9r\u00f4me Vergne.<\/p>\n
The island remains at the yellow\/alert level under the ORSEC volcanic emergency plan, which has been in effect since December 2020. While the number and intensity of earthquakes are increasing, other indicators\u2014deformation, gas emissions, and temperatures\u2014remain stable.<\/p>\n
Monitoring efforts have been stepped up, notably through increased CO\u2082 flux measurements and helicopter flyovers. An upgrade to the orange alert level would depend on phenomena visible on the surface or earthquakes felt by the public.<\/p>\n
