Company officials say they aim to increase the region’s market share from 2 % to 10 % by 2027.

This is a dramatic increase in such a short time, indicating that Jamaica views Latin America as a driver of short-term growth, rather than merely a long-term opportunity. Such goals generally involve more direct flights, closer partnerships with airlines, and a marketing strategy tailored to the region, where Jamaica—though already well-known—must nevertheless be creative in attracting tourists.

India and the Middle East are also considered priority markets as part of a long-haul strategy aimed at attracting travelers who stay longer and spend more. The main challenge, of course, is distance. Growth in these regions depends heavily on connectivity, whether through new routes, strengthened international airline partnerships, or easier connections via hubs. It also depends on Jamaica’s ability to offer a seamless travel experience from the moment of arrival, particularly for visitors crossing multiple time zones.

This roadmap comes after a year that severely tested the resilience of Jamaica’s tourism sector. Authorities reported that the sector had experienced a strong recovery during the 2025/26 fiscal year before the disruptions caused by Hurricane Melissa. Despite this interruption, the government recorded 3.7 million visitors and $3.8 billion in revenue. It commended the work of the Tourism Recovery Task Force, which spearheaded a rapid national response that enabled the sector’s full reopening by mid-December, with a swift resumption of operations at major establishments in Ocho Rios, Negril, and Montego Bay.

Beyond visitor numbers, the government emphasizes the importance of tourism growth for Jamaican businesses. For the upcoming fiscal year, officials plan to prioritize the «Local First» initiative, launched in October 2025. This initiative aims to boost local procurement and strengthen ties with micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), so that new tourism investments translate into jobs and contracts for Jamaicans.

Another major policy initiative: the government’s approval of the Destination Assurance Framework and Strategy. Officials have described it as the world’s first codified destination insurance policy, designed to ensure safe, seamless, and high-quality tourist experiences, while strengthening the island’s public order standards. In practical terms, this reflects a commitment to harmonizing standards across various tourism sectors, extending beyond hotels and resorts.

The roadmap also calls for legislative work on a new law governing tourist offices, a modernized law on travel agencies, and amendments to the laws governing the Apostle Baths and the Milk River Baths, aimed at enabling new public-private partnerships.

Jamaica’s plan places a strong emphasis on growth, diversification, and strengthening national standards. The figures are intended to draw attention. The coming years will show how quickly the airlift, investments, and policy changes can be implemented to achieve these goals.

Journal des Caraïbes Par : L’équipe du Caribbean Journal – La Jamaïque donne un cap important quant à la direction qu’elle souhaite donner au tourisme.
