By the end of 2027, nearly 49 million more people are at risk of falling into a state of acute hunger. In response to this threat, the UN agency is immediately stepping up its preparedness and response measures.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div id=\"block-un-base-theme-content\" class=\"block block-system block-system-main-block block-un-base-theme-content\">\r\n<div class=\"block-content block__content\">\r\n<article class=\"node node--type-news-story node--view-mode-full clearfix\"><header><\/header>\r\n<div class=\"node__content clearfix\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<\/article>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div id=\"block-views-block-content-fields-block-body\" class=\"views-element-container block block-views block-views-block-content-fields-block-body\">\r\n<div class=\"block-content block__content\">\r\n<div>\r\n<div class=\"view view-content-fields view-id-content_fields view-display-id-block_body js-view-dom-id-c3e027130b35a2efbc221d0c07f7b1d7ee0bcc93371ec3c32856ae2e96b2a0dd\">\r\n<div class=\"view-content\">\r\n<div class=\"views-row\">\r\n<div class=\"views-field views-field-field-news-story\">\r\n<div class=\"field-content\">\r\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--one-column-text paragraph--view-mode--default\">\r\n<div class=\"_none\">\r\n<div class=\"w-100\">\r\n<div class=\"layout row layout-builder__layout\">\r\n<div class=\"col-12\">\r\n<div class=\"_none block block-layout-builder block-field-block-paragraph-one-column-text-field-text-column\">\r\n<div class=\"block-content block__content\">\r\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text-column field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\">\r\n<p>Projections from the <a class=\"ext\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/fr.wfp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-extlink=\"\">PAM<\/a> are based on lessons learned from the previous El Ni\u00f1o episode in 2015\u20132016, which affected between 60 and 100 million people. In the 45 countries studied, the number of people facing acute food insecurity could thus rise from 225 million to 274 million by the end of 2027, an increase of approximately 22 %.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00abEl Ni\u00f1o poses a significant threat to the food security of millions of people who are already vulnerable,\u00bb said Carl Skau, Acting Executive Director of the WFP. \u00abThe sooner we help families prepare for these climate shocks, the better we will be able to save lives and protect livelihoods.\u00bb<\/p>\r\n<h2>24 million Africans Face the Threat of Hunger<\/h2>\r\n<p>Central America and Southern Africa are among the regions most at risk. East Africa and parts of Asia are also expected to see their harvests compromised by a succession of droughts, floods, and episodes of extreme heat.<\/p>\r\n<p>In the Caribbean and South America, the WFP forecasts one of the sharpest declines in food security, with more than 16 million additional people affected. Central America is expected to see the largest relative increase among all regions studied (+83.1 %).<\/p>\r\n<p>In East and Southern Africa, more than 18 million people could see their food security situation deteriorate, representing an increase of 26 %. More than $14 million has been allocated to fund vital interventions for approximately half a million people.<\/p>\r\n<p>These interventions help communities and governments better prepare for climate-related shocks while reducing future humanitarian needs. According to the WFP, lessons learned from previous El Ni\u00f1o events show that every dollar invested in preventive measures saves between three and seven dollars in avoided losses and response costs.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00abSevere floods and droughts can quickly plunge resilient communities into crisis.
