La présidente dominicaine Sylvanie Burton a rencontré son homologue chinois Xi Jinping dans la matinée du 14 octobre 2025.
L’engagement diplomatique important s’est déroulé au Grand Palais du Peuple à Pékin, où le président Burton est en visite pour participer à la réunion des dirigeants mondiaux sur les femmes.
Français La veille, le président Jinping s’est adressé à l’assemblée et un communiqué de presse écrit a cité sa promesse aux participants : « Au cours des cinq prochaines années, la Chine fera don de 10 millions de dollars supplémentaires à ONU Femmes ; affectera un quota de 100 millions de dollars au Fonds chinois pour le développement mondial et la coopération Sud-Sud pour la mise en œuvre de projets de coopération au développement pour les femmes et les filles en collaboration avec des organisations internationales ; lancera 1 000 « petits et beaux » programmes de subsistance avec l’aide de la Chine ; invitera 50 000 femmes en Chine pour des programmes d’échange et de formation ; et établira un Centre mondial pour le renforcement des capacités des femmes, visant à former davantage de talents féminins en partenariat avec les pays concernés et les organisations internationales. »
Selon un communiqué distinct du ministère des Affaires étrangères de la République populaire de Chine, lors de leur entretien, le président Xi a souligné la forte amitié et le partenariat entre la Chine et la Dominique dans la région des Caraïbes. Il a souligné que depuis l’établissement de leurs relations diplomatiques il y a plus de vingt ans, les deux nations ont toujours privilégié le respect mutuel et l’égalité. Affirmant que ces relations se sont caractérisées par une confiance politique accrue, des échanges accrus et une coopération accrue dans divers secteurs, il a ajouté que les liens entre les peuples chinois et dominicain se sont renforcés, illustrant un exemple positif de collaboration internationale entre des pays de tailles et de systèmes sociaux différents. Le président Xi a exprimé la volonté de la Chine de travailler avec la Dominique pour approfondir leurs relations bilatérales et apporter davantage de bénéfices à leurs populations.
President Xi reportedly also stressed the importance of maintaining political mutual confidence and exchanging governance experiences among governments, legislatures, and political parties. He called for a focus on practical cooperation, reaffirming China’s support for Dominica’s efforts in climate resilience, disaster management, infrastructure development, renewable energy, healthcare, agriculture, and women’s empowerment. Additionally, the release said he emphasized the importance of enhancing cultural, educational, and tourism exchanges. Both nations should intensify multilateral collaboration, actively participate in the four major Global Initiatives, and work toward building a community with a shared future for humanity, he urged. He added that efforts should also be directed toward implementing agreements from the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women and strengthening cooperation in women’s capacity development.
It is reported that President Burton responded by reaffirming Dominica’s deep appreciation for China’s friendship and support. She described China as a vital partner and expressed optimism about the future of bilateral relations, which she believes will benefit the people of Dominica. As outlined in the release, she reiterated Dominica’s unwavering adherence to the one-China principle and outlined plans to bolster cooperation with China across various sectors, including trade, agriculture, green economy, renewable energy, healthcare, and climate change response. She also emphasized the importance of cultural and people-to-people exchanges and the expansion of cooperation between Latin America, the Caribbean, and China.
President Burton praised China’s role on the global stage, recognizing its efforts to promote peace and stability worldwide. She highlighted China’s initiatives such as the Global Development, Security, Civilization, and Governance Initiatives, which outline pathways toward peaceful coexistence and shared prosperity. Finally, she expressed Dominica’s readiness to collaborate closely with China to oppose unilateralism and hegemonism, safeguarding the interests of developing nations.
On that same day, Wang Huning, the Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), held a meeting with Her Excellency Peng Liyuan, the wife of President Xi Jinping. The event also featured Sima Bahous, the UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women, along with Mr. Burton and other spouses of international leaders. Additionally, leaders of women’s organizations were present to participate in an exhibition focused on digital and intelligent empowerment initiatives aimed at women and girls.
