The Savane Parking Lot Is Being Modernized

The work will be completed in November.

A major renovation of the savanna area is underway in Fort-de-France. It begins with the parking lot, where the 10-month construction project is set to be completed by the end of November.

After work began in early March of this year, the construction of the Fort-de-France parking lot is in its final stages. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of November. In the meantime, workers equipped with electric saws and other tools are busy finishing the project.

A Green and Electric Parking Lot

The goal is to create parking spaces in a new «evergreen» environment using a surface that waterproofs the ground and also allows for drainage. «This renovation also involves creating a green corridor along the entire length of Avenue des Caraïbes,» explains Andy Marc, director of operations at SOAME.

The number of parking spaces will not increase. There were around 200 before. There will be 200 after the work is completed. It should be noted that among these parking spaces, about 40 «will eventually be equipped with charging stations,» Andy Marc explains. Just as the number of parking spaces will not increase, the parking rate will not change either. The cost of the construction work will not affect the cost of parking. «We have devised a system of public subsidies to finance the work,» adds Andy Marc.

The renovation of the Savane parking lot is part of a comprehensive project for the entire Savane area. «In addition to the Savane Park, we’re going to develop the Savane area and Avenue des Caraïbes, and then the Cazotte block. The parking lot will be brand-new by the end of November,» concludes Andy Marc.
