The government announced that the Newborn Allowance Program officially took effect on August 1, 2026, in accordance with a promise made by Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre in the 2026–2027 budget. The Prime Minister’s spokesperson, Melissa Paul, made the announcement during a press briefing ahead of the Cabinet meeting on Monday.
Under this program, mothers of eligible newborns will receive a one-time payment of 1,000 EC$. This payment is reserved for children born on or after August 1, 2026, whose births are registered within the following six months.
A government press release states that the Birth Allowance is intended to «help mothers cover certain immediate expenses related to caring for a newborn.».
