In Saint-Martin, the Lucas Bay pond—a site of exceptional ecological richness—has been revitalized. Thanks to a project led by the Conservatoire du littoral, this haven of biodiversity is becoming an observation site open to everyone, including people with limited mobility.
Hidden from view but rich in meaning, the Lucas Bay pond is one of Saint Martin’s most unassuming treasures. Since 2007, this remarkable site has been protected by the Conservatoire du littoral due to its unique geodiversity—notably its volcanic rock outcrops—and the biodiversity it harbors, including numerous species of shorebirds and waterfowl.
Designated a protected biotope since 2006, listed on the RAMSAR List of Wetlands of International Importance since 2011, and recognized under the SPAW Protocol since 2012, the pond is now enjoying a new lease on life. Thanks to support from the Green Fund, its bird-watching observatory has been completely renovated. It is now the only facility on the island that allows people with limited mobility to safely observe nature.
This project, carried out in collaboration with the Collectivité of Saint Martin and the Prefecture, aims to combine accessibility with respect for the environment. Integration into the landscape, the unobtrusive design of the infrastructure, and visitor safety have guided every stage of this renovation.
Both residents and visitors are now invited to (re)discover this exceptional site, in a spirit of contemplation and respect. An invitation to practice mindful citizenship, in the face of the untamed beauty of Lucas Bay.
