Conflict in the Middle East: Energy Costs Soar in the Caribbean

The conflict in the Middle East that broke out in late February, pitting the United States and Israel against Iran, has caused energy costs to skyrocket worldwide. Thanks to price regulation mechanisms, Martinique has so far been spared, but the Prefecture has just announced an increase in energy costs effective March 1.er April 2026.

    International Context and Inflation

Since the conflict began on February 28, 2026—and especially since Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz—energy prices have skyrocketed around the world. Scarcity drives up prices.

France’s overseas departments and territories are already on the front lines of the inflation crisis, with prices well above the national average; they are therefore expected to face another rise in energy prices, despite the price-control measures.

    1er April: Rising Energy Costs

Against this backdrop of soaring global energy costs, the prefecture will have to adjust the prices of petroleum products in Martinique, in accordance with the price regulation mechanism. «In Martinique, this increase will be modest for premium unleaded gasoline but more significant for diesel. Prices will nevertheless remain lower than those currently observed in mainland France,» states the press release issued by the prefecture.

As for the price of gas, which is less affected by international factors, it depends on the euro-dollar exchange rate, which is currently unfavorable and will therefore lead to a «moderate» increase in the price of gas cylinders.

    Stabilize the situation

Despite this worrying situation for the household budgets of Martinicans, the prefecture is trying to reassure the public by pointing out that there is no risk of a shortage: «Martinique’s energy security is fully guaranteed. […] In fact, the SARA refinery and its supply contracts enable us to meet the territory’s needs.»

The price regulation system is designed to protect consumers from excessive price fluctuations, both in Martinique and throughout the other overseas departments and territories, provided that consumers cooperate.

Consumer behavior is key to preventing a rush to the gas stations. «The prefect is calling on the public to act responsibly to prevent hoarding, which alone could disrupt supply chains and create artificial tensions in the distribution system,» the prefecture emphasizes.
