After several weeks devoted to history, remembrance, and the passing down of traditions, the «Mai des mémoires» series organized by Martinique Together will conclude with a lecture on slave resistance and the abolitionist struggle. The historian Frédéric Régent will take place on Saturday, May 30, at 5 p.m. at Madiana on the topic of: «Acts of Resistance by Slaves and Abolitionist Writings: Key Figures in the Abolition Movement.».
A renowned historian, Frédéric Régent is an associate professor at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University and a specialist in the history of slavery in the French colonies from the 17th to the 19th centuries. His research focuses in particular on slave-owning societies, free people of color, revolutionary movements, and the processes that led to the abolition of slavery.
Author of several reference works, including France and Its Slaves, Free and Unchained or even The Masters of Guadeloupe, he also served as chair of the National Committee for the Remembrance and History of Slavery from 2016 to 2019.
The proposed conference in Madiana aims to revisit a key aspect of the history of abolition: the role played not only by the enslaved people themselves—through their resistance, revolts, and acts of survival—but also by the abolitionists who brought these struggles to the fore in writings, political debates, and the public sphere. This approach sheds light on human stories that are often overlooked, while situating colonial societies within their historical complexity.
This event will bring to a close a month of activities focused on the memory of slavery and historical legacies in Caribbean societies. It is aimed at both history enthusiasts and the general public who wish to better understand the processes that led to the abolition of slavery in the French colonies.
