    Champions League: PSG’s “no-jersey” rule in Marseille Finally Repealed

    BACKTRACKING – The Bouches-du-Rhône Police Prefecture decided this Friday (late August), less than 24 hours after announcing it, to rescind the order banning the wearing of PSG jerseys in downtown Marseille on Sunday evening, during the Champions League final.

    «In light of the confusion caused by this order, the police prefect decided today to rescind it.» After half a day of controversy, the authorities have backtracked. The Bouches-du-Rhône Police Prefecture announced Friday that it had decided to rescind the order it had issued the previous day banning the wearing of PSG jerseys, as well as the presence of Parisian club supporters, in downtown Marseille on Sunday evening during the Champions League final between Paris and Bayern Munich.«The sole purpose of this order was to protect Parisian fans, and it was in no way intended to restrict freedom of movement.», the prefecture stated in a press release, adding that special security measures will nevertheless be put in place. «On Sunday, law enforcement officers stationed around the Old Port will be particularly vigilant in order to prevent any troublemakers from causing trouble, without exception.»

    The authorities point out that their original idea was «to prevent a recurrence of the public disturbances that occurred around the Old Port during the broadcast of the semifinal» won by Olympique de Marseille’s archrival against RB Leipzig (3-0) on Tuesday. Following the match, two people—one of whom was wearing the capital city club’s jersey—were assaulted in downtown Marseille.
    The rivalry remains intense between fans of the two clubs; OM fans pride themselves on being «at »never the first" 1993 Champions League champions. And some Marseille fans are unhappy about being caught up with—or even surpassed, since PSG has already won the 1996 Cup Winners' Cup—by their «enemy» on the list of winners.
    The initial decision by the Prefecture of Police prohibited «any person claiming to be a Parisian fan or behaving as such» traffic will be restricted within a certain area around the Old Port from 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 21, through 3:00 a.m. on Monday, August 22
