Following an initial report from Australian authorities regarding 32 types of sand-based toys (magic sand, drawing sand, or modeling sand)—which are not sold in France—European authorities in turn conducted thorough investigations. These investigations confirmed that certain toys distributed on the European market—particularly those containing colored sand for creative activities or «magic sand» modeling sand—were also covered by this report.
The Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs, and Fraud Control has informed industry professionals of the need to suspend the sale of all sand-based toys, until it can be confirmed that these products do not contain asbestos, at which point, if appropriate, they may be offered for sale again.
Retailers that sold the products in question have already been conducting consumer recalls since February 2026. Owners of these toys are strongly advised to stop using them and to check whether their product is subject to a recall.
The products subject to recall can be viewed on the website rappel.conso.gouv.fr. Since testing is still underway, businesses and consumers are encouraged to check this website regularly.
