Poséi: Behind the Debate Over Bananas Lies the Strategic Issue of Food Sovereignty

An article from Mediapart dedicated to the distribution of European aid for Poséi goes far beyond the issue of banana subsidies alone. It highlights The Debate on the Agricultural Model in the Overseas Territories.

The banana industry is at the heart of the Caribbean economy. As the successor to the plantation economy, it accounts for a significant portion of the land, infrastructure, and public support. The historical land concentration remains a major challenge.

The Chlordecone Scandal has caused long-term contamination of the soil and water, calling into question the environmental legitimacy of intensive monoculture.

Le Poséi, established in 1989, aims to offset the disadvantages faced by the outermost regions. In practice, major export sectors receive the bulk of the support, while agricultural diversification remains underfunded.

Access to Financial Assistance is often contingent on membership in a Producers' Organization, which favors the most well-organized farms and penalizes many poorly organized independent producers

Food Addiction feeds the high cost of living due to the widespread reliance on imports.

The 2028 European Reform contrasts two approaches: continuing support for the banana industry, the largest private employer, or rebalance aid in favor of food sovereignty.

The Central Issue is to reconcile maintaining the export sector and development of a local, diversified, and resilient agricultural sector. Gdc
