Sargassum

An Environmental and Health Challenge

For more than a decade, massive strandings of Sargassum seaweed have been affecting the coasts of Martinique and the Caribbean. Health, the economy, tourism, and quality of life: Antilla is following this long-term issue.

Brown patches on the horizon, deserted beaches, the smell of rotten eggs: Sargassum has become one of Martinique’s biggest challenges. It’s a phenomenon that comes from the open sea, with very real consequences for residents.

01A scourge from the sea

Since the 2010s, huge rafts of Sargassum drift from the tropical Atlantic to the Caribbean. Their seasonal but unpredictable strandings transform entire bays into brown, foul-smelling expanses.

«An endless tide—one we must learn to respond to.»

02A public health issue

As they decompose, algae release gases, including'hydrogen sulfide, whose emissions are causing discomfort to nearby residents and raising serious health concerns. Schools, homes, and businesses located near the affected coastlines are directly affected.

03Collection and Recycling

Collection at sea and on land, floating booms, attempts to valuation (compost, materials, energy): Solutions are hard to find and difficult to fund. Antilla tracks collection reports and waste management plans, season after season.

04A regional response

Because Sargassum crosses borders, it calls for cooperation on a pan-European scale Caribbean. Research, stranding forecasts, shared resources: this issue has local, regional, and international dimensions.

Our archives are being digitized. The Antilla archives are currently being digitized. Very soon, as this work progresses, this section will be expanded to include articles and magazines published back when the Internet was not yet ubiquitous.
