In light of recent events in Haiti and the sharp deterioration of the public health situation in the country, Serge LETCHIMY, President of the Executive Council, sent a letter today to the Prefect of Martinique to express support for the initiative by the ASSOKA association calling for the suspension of the enforcement of Orders to Leave French Territory (OQTF) for Haitian nationals.
The United Nations High Commissioner has described the situation in the country as «highly unsustainable for the Haitian people.» Furthermore, « »It is hard to imagine that Haitian nationals could be subject to an OQTF.« "In the face of the various crises currently affecting Haitian society, the people of Martinique feel compassion and solidarity for Haiti. For, far beyond the shared history, language, and culture of our two islands, it is above all a shared destiny that unites us deeply.” » said Serge LETCHIMY.
In response to the gravity of the situation and in the spirit of the solidarity that is essential among the peoples of the Caribbean, the Territorial Collectivity of Martinique will establish a monitoring unit to provide close support to Haitian nationals who need it. « Haitian migrants simply aspire to a better life, and we must stand by them«, emphasized the Chairman of the Executive Board.
