Fort-de-France, October 2, 2025 – Seismic activity at Mount Pelée has reached levels not seen since 2019, with more than 4,000 volcanic earthquakes recorded in a single month, according to the Martinique Volcanological and Seismological Observatory (OVSM).
«The probability of an eruption in the short term remains low, but we cannot rule out the possibility of one in the medium term,» said its director, Jérôme Vergne.
The island remains at the yellow/alert level under the ORSEC volcanic emergency plan, which has been in effect since December 2020. While the number and intensity of earthquakes are increasing, other indicators—deformation, gas emissions, and temperatures—remain stable.
Monitoring efforts have been stepped up, notably through increased CO₂ flux measurements and helicopter flyovers. An upgrade to the orange alert level would depend on phenomena visible on the surface or earthquakes felt by the public.
The OVSM urges residents to stay informed, report any earthquakes they feel, and follow official guidelines.
