When America Abandons Its Role as a Model.

The Trump phenomenon is no longer merely a matter of American political debate. It has become a global geopolitical reality with profound implications for peripheral societies, and particularly for the Caribbean region.

Since the end of World War II, the United States presented themselves as the guardians of an order based on law, the institutions and multilateralism. The Charter some Nations United Nations, signed in 1945, was based on the primacy of collective rules.

This deviation from the power American, characterized by the glorification of the leader and the downplaying of checks and balances, undermines the international order and legitimizes regimes authoritarian.

History teaches us that Bonaparte, Putin, Erdoğan or Orbán all began by adhering to the rules before subverting them.

View from the Martinique and the Caribbean, This development brings to mind colonial memories in which the power The central government conflated authority with domination.

When the principles of the UN are faltering at the top, it is up to the West Indies to remind everyone that the law is non-negotiable.
