Parental Bereavement Leave is compensated without verification of eligibility requirements. This leave lasts 8 or 15 days. It does not require a doctor’s note. To receive this leave, the person must submit a request directly to their employer or, if that is not possible, to their health insurance provider within one year of the death.
A doctor or midwife may, if medically necessary, prescribe sick leave for a patient who is grieving of a child under the age of 25 or a dependent under the age of 25. This certificate must be issued within 13 weeks of the death. It is covered by the patient’s health insurance provider, and no waiting period applies (provided that eligibility requirements are met).
How do I issue this sick leave certificate?
Since May 7, the online service for reporting work stoppages at amelipro has changed: all you have to do is Check the box next to: «related to the death of a child or dependent». There is no longer a need to attach a medical certificate, and it is not necessary to ask the patient for proof: the doctor or midwife may check this box based on the patient’s statements, without being responsible for their accuracy.
