In light of the accelerating aging of the French population, the government wants to directly involve citizens in shaping the public policies of the future. A national consultation, open through September 20, will gather the expectations, concerns, and proposals of the French public to inform the work of the upcoming National Conference on Independence, scheduled for the fall.
The stakes are high.
Demographic projections show that by 2030, one in four French people will be over 60, compared with one in three by 2050. This trend is transforming the country’s needs in terms of health care, housing, mobility, and support services.
The number of people over the age of 85 is expected to double
That amounts to nearly 700,000 additional people who have lost their independence and require enhanced support.
The consultation titled «Aging in France: Today and Tomorrow» covers 15 topics related to health, home care, housing, nursing homes, employment for seniors, caregivers, and combating isolation.
The government invites older adults, their families, caregivers, professionals, and all citizens to participate. The input will be used to develop a national action plan to prepare France for the demographic transition.
A Major Challenge for Martinique
This consultation is of particular importance to Martinique, where the population is aging more rapidly than in mainland France. The declining birth rate, the exodus of young workers, and the growing elderly population are profoundly altering the region’s demographic balance.
