On Tuesday, March 26, EDF in Martinique presented its 2023 results and outlook 2024.
Three key points stand out in this review: a slow but steady energy transition driven by the expansion of solar power generation; EDF’s support for its customers—particularly those in the most vulnerable situations—to help them manage their energy consumption and, consequently, their budgets; and, finally, massive investments to modernize and strengthen the power grid and accommodate new sources of carbon-free energy.
The march toward the energy transition continues
The energy transition rests on two pillars: production and consumption. On the production side, renewable energy still accounts for 26% of the electricity mix. While wind and biomass generation declined due to technical outages at power plants or in the surrounding grid, solar generation surged by 18% thanks to abundant sunshine and an increase in installed capacity.
On the consumption side, factors driving an increase in consumption were offset by effective management of energy demand. Indeed, the high temperatures in 2023 (the second-hottest year since 1965) led to increased use of air conditioners. In addition, customers are increasingly equipped with electrical appliances. Nevertheless, consumption remains stable thanks to very significant energy savings: 21 days’ worth of consumption were avoided in 2023.
EDF helps the people of Martinique manage their energy use and utility bills
Thanks to the Digital meter installed in 86% households and at the’EDF DOM&Corse app, customers can track their electricity usage in real time and thus better manage it.
EDF advises its customers on practical steps they can take to lower their bills (defrosting the refrigerator regularly, putting a lid on pots while cooking, unplugging appliances in standby mode, etc.) and assists with investments in more energy-efficient equipment, the installation of ceiling fans, or insulation work.
For customers facing energy poverty, EDF, in collaboration with social workers, offers assistance with using the energy voucher. 49,600 customers benefited from this program in 2023.
