On December 19, the #YoCanto project posted a video featuring a magnificent performance of Handel’s «Alleluia,» presented in a completely unique way at the Gothic basilica of Santa María del Mar in Barcelona, Spain. The video has garnered over 1.5 million views. For the occasion, 352 choristers from Spain and Portugal, ranging in age from 14 to 82, came together virtually to sing the famous piece composed by Handel in 1741. Their recordings were then skillfully accompanied by the Orquestra Barroca Catalana and the Barcelona Ars Nova choir so that this «Hallelujah» could resonate powerfully within the walls of the seven-century-old building. It was a resounding success.
But what’s most astonishing is that, filmed from their homes, the choir members appear projected onto the columns and vaults of the centuries-old monument in a stunning video-mapping display, offering viewers a true kaleidoscope of colors and an explosion of «Hallelujah.» The beauty of this video lies in the fact that the basilica, initially shrouded in darkness, gradually lights up and comes to life in an extraordinary way, conveying a powerful message of hope. That is the true meaning of Christmas.
